Commercial Pool Tile and Depth Markers in Rockwall, TX

Rockwall Pool Resurfacing handles commercial pool tile in Rockwall, Texas: depth markers on the wall and the deck, NO DIVING tiles, the contrasting floor line where a pool turns deep, step and bench edge tile, and waterline tile for HOA, apartment, hotel and other public pools. Texas applies the 2021 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code to commercial pools, and for pool and spa shells that code lists tile under the ANSI A108, A118 and A136.1 standards.

The state also sets a minimum of its own: at least two depth markers on every public pool or spa, whatever its size and shape, in the top 4½ inches of the wall just under the coping. We'll talk through which markers and edge tiles your pool has now, and whether the work fits into a commercial pool resurfacing closure. Estimates are free, and calls are answered 24/7.

Pool depth markers on the wall and the deck

The 2021 code asks for two sets of depth markers on a public pool, one read by swimmers and one read by people on the deck.

Wall markers, read from the water

The depth in feet goes plainly on the vertical wall at or above the waterline, placed to be read from the water with as much of each number showing above the surface as possible, and it must be accurate to within plus or minus 3 inches; vanishing-edge and rim-flow gutter pools are the exceptions. The figures stand at least 4 inches high in a permanent color that contrasts with the background, with feet and inches spelled out or written as Ft. and In.

Deck markers, read from the edge

On the deck, markers sit within 18 inches of the water's edge, turned so they read while standing on the deck facing the pool, and a marker laid flat must be slip resistant. The CDC's model code, a voluntary model rather than Texas law, also allows them on the coping, asks for durable, weather-resistant material and rules out the foot and inch symbols in favor of FT and IN.

NO DIVING markers and the slope-break line

Where a public pool is 5 feet deep or less, the 2021 code displays the No Diving symbol on the deck at intervals of no more than 25 feet, each one directly beside a depth marker, with any further signs following the NEMA Z535 standard. The CDC's model code pairs the words NO DIVING with the symbol at every deck depth marker in water 5 feet deep or shallower, in letters and symbols at least 4 inches high. The Texas rule doesn't require the NO DIVING marker on the interior tile line.

Marking where the floor turns deep

On a Class B or Class C pool over 5 feet deep, HOA and apartment pools among them, Texas wants the shallow-to-deep transition marked permanently in a color that stands out from the bottom, and its example is a row of floor tile at least 4 inches wide. The CDC's model code describes a line 2 to 6 inches wide, set on the floor at the shallow side of the break and carried up the walls to the waterline, with a rope and float line one foot toward the shallow end. Boards planning a full refinish can read about HOA and apartment pool resurfacing.

Safety tile on steps, benches and ledges

Contrasting edges are the other half of commercial tile work. The CDC's model code outlines the leading edges of underwater benches with continuous slip-resistant, color-contrasting tile or another permanent marking ¾ inch to 2 inches wide, and the edges of underwater toe ledges and structural support ledges with a marking 1 to 2 inches wide, and it wants rounded corners wherever walls meet. The 2021 code's band for public pool stair treads is 1 to 2 inches, and Rockwall's amendment adds a solid or broken stripe at least 1 inch wide, plainly visible from the deck, on the leading edge of each swimout and underwater seat or bench step.

Slip resistance, measured

No tile is slip proof, only slip resistant, says Crossville, a tile maker. It wants pool deck tile textured for a higher wet dynamic coefficient of friction (DCOF, a measure of wet traction), keeps polished tile away from standing water, and gives a wet DCOF of 0.42 or more as the industry standard for level interior surfaces walked on wet. The CDC's model code ties "slip resistant" to the ANSI A326 requirement for each installation, measured with the DCOF AcuTest, and IAPMO's 2021 Uniform Swimming Pool, Spa & Hot Tub Code, which Rockwall hasn't adopted, sets the same 0.42 minimum for level walkways meant to be walked on wet.

Setting materials

MAPEI's guide specification for tile in pools follows the Tile Council of North America's P602 method and its minimum standards: cement grout to ANSI A118.6 or better, epoxy grout to ANSI A118.3, a cement bond coat to ANSI A118.4 or better, flexible sealant to ASTM C920 and movement joints to the EJ171 method. Loose, cracked or worn waterline tile is a separate job, and Rockwall Pool Resurfacing covers it under pool tile repair.

Commercial pool tile and depth marker questions

What are depth markers?

Permanent figures that show how deep the water is, in feet and inches. A public pool carries them on the wall, read from the water, and on the deck within 18 inches of the edge, read from the deck. Suppliers sell them as ceramic tiles: smooth ones for the waterline, and skid-resistant 6-by-6-inch ones for the deck with 4-inch lettering.

How do you tell the depth of a pool?

Read the markers. On a public pool the wall marker faces the water and the deck marker faces someone standing at the edge, and the 2021 code holds each to within 3 inches of the real depth; the CDC's model code says to the nearest 3 inches. On a Texas HOA, apartment or other Class B or C pool deeper than 5 feet, the contrasting line across the floor shows where the shallow area ends.

How to mark pool depth?

On a public pool, the 2021 code puts markers at the shallowest and deepest water and at every point where the slope changes, in depth steps of no more than 2 feet, spaced no more than 25 feet apart and spread evenly along both sides and both ends, on the wall and again on the deck. The CDC's model code is finer in shallow water, marking every foot below 5 feet. Texas adds its two-marker minimum in the top 4½ inches of the wall.

How much do pool depth marker tiles cost?

Supplier catalog prices read on October 4, 2026, material only: a ceramic deck depth marker with an abrasive non-slip finish at $10.49 a tile, skid-resistant 6-by-6-inch ceramic depth and NO DIVING deck tiles at $14.89 each, and a smooth ceramic waterline marker with 4-inch numbers at $34.49 a tile. A 2025 national guide for property managers puts porcelain pool tile at $1 to $5 a square foot, ceramic at $3 to $10 and glass at up to $25. Those are material prices, not installed ones, and Rockwall Pool Resurfacing prices the installed work free after a look at the pool.

Does a public spa need depth markers?

Yes. Texas counts at least two depth markers for each pool or spa, whatever its size or shape, and the 2021 code gives public spas at least two permanent depth markers with numbers at least 4 inches high, along with a sign telling bathers to check the temperature and stay out above 104°F. Backyard spas are exempt from that section.
