Pool Tile Repair and Replacement in Rockwall, TX

Rockwall Pool Resurfacing handles pool tile repair in Rockwall, Texas: resetting loose and cracked waterline tile, regrouting, and replacing a full band of waterline tile in porcelain, glass or stone, as a job of its own or alongside a replaster. The National Plasterers Council's glossary calls it perimeter tile, the water line tile that runs around the edge of the pool.

Typical Dallas–Fort Worth prices in 2026 run $15 to $30 per linear foot for a targeted waterline repair, and a typical pool has about 80 to 120 linear feet of waterline. Estimates are free, and we'll talk through the tile, the grout and the cure time before the pool is drained.

Pool tile that holds up under water

For tile that spends its life under water, LATICRETE, a tile-setting materials maker, asks for a low absorption rate, a high coefficient of friction, chemical resistance, resistance to moisture expansion and, in cool climates, resistance to freeze-thaw. Pool tile should be vitreous, absorbing 0.5% to 3% water, or impervious, under 0.5%, by the ASTM C373 test; tile over 3% may expand permanently from moisture. The 2021 pool code that Rockwall has adopted lists tile under the ANSI A108/A118/A136.1 standards.

Glass tile

Glass expands with heat differently from ceramic, so outdoors it is more likely to crack from thermal shock, Custom Building Products says; it should meet ANSI A137.2, carry its maker's approval for pools and, where sun heats it, be kept from splashes of cool water if possible. Interstyle, a glass tile maker, requires face-mounted or dot-mounted sheets under water, back-butters every tile so water can't collect behind it, and wants new concrete cured at least 28 days first. Glass tile and all-tile pool finishes take glass past the waterline.

Mosaic sheets and their backing

The mesh or dots on the back of a mosaic sheet have to stay bonded and must not dissolve in water. Custom Building Products' check is to soak a sheet in a bucket overnight, and both it and LATICRETE prefer face-mounted mosaics, LATICRETE warning that some back-mounted sheets can end up with very low bond strength once soaked and attacked by pool chemicals.

Mortar and grout

LATICRETE sets pool tile in mortars made for constant submersion, latex-fortified for adhesion and flexibility or epoxy to rule out chemical attack, and Custom Building Products names ANSI A118.15 mortars, with a glass-specific mortar for glass tile. On grout the two disagree. LATICRETE recommends its epoxy grout for all submerged installations and says any discoloring in sunlight doesn't affect performance, while Custom Building Products says most epoxy grouts yellow outdoors and that a high-performance cement grout meeting ANSI A118.7 holds up for years under water with proper water care.

Why pool tile comes loose, cracks or loses its grout

LATICRETE calls grout breakdown under water "not uncommon" and lists six causes: poor water chemistry, filling the pool too soon, no allowance for movement, the wrong grout, poor surface preparation and a poor grout or tile installation. It advises finding and fixing the cause before repairing anything, so the repair doesn't have to be repeated.

Sun, cold water and freezes

The tile between the waterline and the coping changes temperature fast. In LATICRETE's example, dark tile in direct sun can top 120°F, and a sudden splash of 72°F water makes it contract sharply, enough to crack tile or break its bond; a pool drained and left empty and dry for a long stretch can do the same. Rockwall's airport weather station reached 108°F on August 18, 2023. Freezing is the other risk: LATICRETE says water can expand up to 25% as it freezes, the National Plasterers Council says about 9%, and both warn that repeated freeze-thaw cycles damage tile. NOAA's storm record has temperatures at or below 10°F across much of Rockwall County on the morning of January 15, 2024.

Water balance and the grout

When pH runs high, LATICRETE says, mineral deposits form on tile and grout at the waterline and can also build up behind the tile until the bond weakens; when it runs low, cement grout etches, roughens or disappears and the mortar beneath follows. It adds that calcium hardness below 200 to 250 ppm lets chlorine draw calcium out of cement-based materials, and Custom Building Products keeps a tiled pool's hardness (its calcium content) at 250 to 400 ppm, pH at 7.2 to 7.8 and alkalinity at 80 to 120 ppm, checked daily. Rockwall's fill water comes from the North Texas Municipal Water District, and the City's 2025 water report lists its total hardness at 96.0 to 200 ppm, the district's plant figures.

A white crust along the tile line is usually scale rather than damage: Orenda, a pool-chemical maker, says the white lines evaporation leaves on tile are a common form of calcium carbonate scale. Removing it is pool tile cleaning and calcium removal, not repair.

Movement joints

Besides any joints carried up from the concrete shell, LATICRETE wants movement joints in pool tile every 8 to 12 feet each way, to the Tile Council of North America's EJ171 method, specified by the project's architect or engineer. Oceanside Glass & Tile requires a flexible, submersion-rated sealant between the tile and every restraining edge, such as the deck or coping, at inside corners and over joints in the shell, with in-field joints no more than 8 feet apart for glass and 12 feet for porcelain or ceramic. That soft joint at the coping comes up again whenever the coping changes; pool coping replacement covers that side.

How pool tile is repaired and replaced

LATICRETE's repair method for loose or cracked tile is to cut the tiles out with an angle grinder or circular saw fitted with a dustless attachment, leave the shell clean and free of standing water, grind old thin-set back to the concrete without damaging any waterproofing membrane, and set new tile in a pool-rated thin-set. Oceanside Glass & Tile cuts its tile only on a wet saw with a continuous smooth-rim diamond blade, never dry, because dry cutting chips the tile and makes harmful dust.

Regrouting

For regrouting, LATICRETE removes old grout to at least half the joint depth, down to sound grout or mortar, with a power washer of 1,000 to 2,000 psi or more or with diamond saw blades, then vacuums, rinses and lets the joints dry completely. Its epoxy grout then cures 10 days at 70°F, and its pre-mixed and cement grouts 14 days, before the pool is filled.

Curing and the refill

Cure times stretch outdoors. Custom Building Products says 14 days is enough only under ideal conditions, which outdoors rarely come 14 days in a row, so it recommends at least 21; Lunada Bay Tile, a glass tile maker, waits 7 days before aggressive cleaning and 21 before the fill. Tiled pools are then filled slowly, about 2 feet per 24 hours, with the fill water within 10°F of the shell, unlike plaster, which is filled as fast as possible to avoid a ring.

Rockwall's storm-water ordinance names mortar and ceramic material, and the wash water from equipment used to apply them, among the illicit discharges into streets and drains. West-northwest of Rockwall, Rockwall Pool Resurfacing also handles pool tile repair in Sachse.

Pool tile repair questions and answers

How much does it cost to replace pool tiles?

For waterline tile, national 2026 figures run $1,200 to $3,000 on a 10' x 20' pool, $1,900 to $4,800 on a 16' x 32' pool and $2,400 to $6,000 on a 20' x 40' pool. Tiling the whole pool costs far more, $6,500 to $16,400 for the smallest of those sizes on the same national basis. Rockwall Pool Resurfacing gives a firm price free after seeing the pool.

Can you replace pool tile without draining the pool?

No. LATICRETE's maintenance guide says tile, stone and grout should be replaced only when the pool is drained and dry enough to take a tile installation, with no repair attempted under water, and the setting materials have to cure fully before the refill. It also empties tiled pools slowly, at about 2 feet per 24 hours, so groundwater pressure can't lift tiles in a pool without a waterproofing membrane.

What type of tile is best for a pool?

Porcelain and glass, for most pools, because they absorb the least water, LATICRETE says. Not every ceramic tile qualifies, Custom Building Products adds, so the tile's maker should confirm it is recommended for submerged use, and glass tile needs its own mortar and installation care.

Is it difficult to retile a pool?

It takes more than setting tile. Custom Building Products' pre-job check looks for structural cracks, exposed rebar, a level bond beam, movement joints between the deck and the pool, and moisture coming through the shell; LATICRETE says the movement joints have to be specified by the project's architect or engineer; and the finished tile then cures 14 to 21 days before the fill. Rockwall Pool Resurfacing handles the tile, the joints and the refill as one job.

Can new tile go over old pool tile?

Sometimes. LATICRETE allows new tile over existing pool tile with its 254 Platinum mortars if the pool is in good condition and the old tile is well bonded: the old tile is scrubbed and neutralized, loose or missing pieces are repaired, a skim coat about 1/16 inch thick goes on, more mortar is combed over it, and the new tile is beaten in for full bedding.
