Pool coping materials: stone, travertine, brick and cantilever concrete
Whatever it's made of, coping has jobs to do under the 2021 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code, which the City of Rockwall has adopted. It must be slip resistant and cleanable, and where the water is deeper than 42 inches, the top of the coping or deck counts as the handhold swimmers grab, no more than 12 inches above the design waterline.
Travertine and other natural stone
The Natural Stone Institute calls travertine a land-formed limestone. Like marble, it is a calcium carbonate stone that mild acids can etch, its absorption ranges from under 1% to over 10%, and relatively few limestone varieties have a good record as exterior paving where it freezes and thaws. True travertine also carries voids from gas trapped as it formed: the ones open to the face are usually filled with cement or resin during fabrication, but voids just below the face aren't, and a small concentrated load can break through the thin stone over them. Siliceous stones such as granite, basalt, quartzite and sandstone are generally harder and more resistant to abrasion and chemicals. Where the deck is stone as well, the page on travertine and paver pool decks covers that side.
Brick coping
Marion Ceramics makes its brick coping from hard-fired clay, extruded under high vacuum and fired at near 2,000°F, and says it stays colorfast in sun and pool chemicals, with a die-skin finish lightly textured for slip resistance. Fired clay varies in color, so the maker recommends blending coping from several cartons, and it warns that skipping its installation details can void its conditional limited warranty.
Cantilever coping poured with the deck
A cantilever edge is the deck concrete itself, poured out over the pool wall. Stegmeier, a Texas maker of concrete forms, makes foam forms that attach to the tile on gunite pools with double-faced tape and tie wires and come off while the concrete can still be slick-finished with a profile tool, and Mortex's edge profiles run from the Keystone, or Flair, edge and the bullnose to the French Curve and a Stone Edge that gives cantilever coping the look of natural rock. On a cantilevered deck Stegmeier lays 15-pound felt over the bond beam as a bond breaker, so the deck can move without disturbing the tile; on a coping pour it leaves the felt out, because the concrete has to stick to the pool wall.

How pool coping is replaced on a concrete pool
Coping on a concrete pool is the simplest case, Unilock says, because the pool wall carries the coping. Its method roughens the top of the wall so the mortar grips, dry-fits and cuts every unit first, then sets each one with concrete adhesive against the wall and a bed of modified mortar under the rest, combed on with a 1/4-inch notched trowel over a pre-wetted base. The mortar bed is what lets each unit's slope be adjusted.
Overhang, slope and joints
Unilock sets coping to overhang the wall by about 2 inches and fall at a 2% grade away from the water, kept straight with a string line, with 1/4-inch joints filled with a flexible exterior tile grout. Units up to 72 inches long suit straight pools, units over 18 inches are avoided on curves, the 90° corners go in before the rest, and mitered cuts generally look best. Marmiro Stones, a coping supplier, sets natural stone directly on the bond beam over a fortified mortar bed with back-buttered thin-set, puts the waterline tile on a waterproofing membrane, and requires an expansion joint behind the coping.
Fiberglass and vinyl-liner pools
With no concrete wall to sit on, Unilock first frames and pours a reinforced concrete collar around the pool, at least 6 by 6 by 6 inches, with its top recessed 1/2 inch below the top of the pool, and sets the coping on that collar.
Tile, cleanup and the rest of the remodel
Where cantilever forms go on, Stegmeier wants the waterline tile set from the high point of the bond beam and bedded out level first, so tile and coping are planned together; pool tile repair covers the tile. After setting, Marion Ceramics clears any cement film from brick coping with sulfamic acid crystals or a brick and tile cleaner, on coping wetted with clean water first. Rockwall's storm-water ordinance keeps ready-mixed concrete, mortar and the wash water from the tools that carried them out of streets, alleys and storm drains. When steps, tile and the deck change too, the job becomes pool remodeling, and the 2021 code's scope covers that alteration, renovation and replacement work as well as new pools.

The joint between the coping and the deck
The 2021 code requires the joint where coping meets a concrete deck to be watertight and built to protect the coping and its mortar bed from the deck's expected movement. Marmiro Stones explains why: the bond beam under the coping is rigid while the deck moves with heat, settlement and freeze-thaw, and without a gap and a flexible sealant the deck pushes on the coping until it cracks or spalls, whatever the deck is made of. Its guideline calls for a continuous gap the full depth of the deck, no sand or polymeric sand in it, and a wait of at least 30 days after a concrete deck is poured before the joint is caulked. The sealant itself is pool mastic replacement work.
Rockwall's clay under the deck
The NRCS soil map puts Houston Black clay under about half of Rockwall, and in dry spells that soil opens cracks up to 4 inches wide and a foot or more deep that stay open 90 to 150 days in most years. In the words of the 1977 soil survey for the two counties, shrinking and swelling "causes much damage to building foundations, roads, and other structures". The NRCS rates that ground for houses rather than pools, but it is the ground a pool deck sits on.
Freezes at the waterline
The National Plasterers Council says freeze-thaw cycles can damage almost any material, coping included, and that pieces spanning the waterline are the most vulnerable, because water wicks up into them and expands about 9% as it freezes; it doesn't count that damage as a material or workmanship defect. Rockwall's airport weather station kept its daily high at or below 32°F for nine days in a row, February 10 to 18, 2021, and Lavon Dam, the nearest NOAA station with temperature normals, averages 44.4 nights a year at or below 32°F. Marion Ceramics advises pools in freeze-thaw areas to lower the water each winter and use a cover that doesn't enclose the coping.
Not every problem needs new coping: the Natural Stone Institute calls filling travertine voids in place, as they open up, acceptable and common practice, and that kind of fix is pool coping repair. Northwest of Rockwall, Rockwall Pool Resurfacing also handles pool coping replacement in Murphy.

(469) 653-0486Pool coping replacement questions and answers
What is the average cost to replace pool coping?
A typical home pool has 60 to 100 linear feet of coping, and new coping lands around $2,000 to $5,000 for most homes in one 2026 Dallas–Fort Worth price guide, with bigger pools and premium stone pushing that higher. National 2025 figures put coping replacement at $30 to $50 per linear foot, depending on the material. Rockwall Pool Resurfacing measures the pool and prices it free.
Can inground pool coping be replaced?
Yes, on the common pool types. On a concrete pool the new coping sits on the existing wall, which carries it; on fiberglass and vinyl-liner pools it goes on a reinforced concrete collar poured around the pool, Unilock says. Marion Ceramics' sales manager says brick coping in particular can be installed on gunite, fiberglass or vinyl-liner pools.
What is the most affordable option for pool coping?
Bull nose concrete, the budget option in Dallas–Fort Worth figures for 2026, at $12 to $22 per linear foot installed, against $20 to $35 for travertine and $25 to $45 for natural stone from the same source. Cantilever coping poured with the deck runs $10 to $20 per linear foot in another 2026 Dallas–Fort Worth price list.
How much does travertine pool coping cost?
Dallas–Fort Worth sources differ: one 2026 guide puts travertine, which it calls the most popular choice, at $20 to $35 per linear foot installed, and another 2026 price list at $30 to $55. National 2026 averages run higher, at $55 to $80. Where a travertine deck goes in at the same time, a Texas supplier's 2026 guide adds $30 to $60 per linear foot for matching coping.
Should pool coping be replaced at the same time as a replaster?
It usually costs less: Dallas–Fort Worth figures for 2026 show coping done with a replaster typically saving 15 to 25% on the coping portion, against coping replaced on its own. The pool is empty for a replaster anyway, LATICRETE replaces tile and grout only in a drained, dry pool, and Stegmeier sets the waterline tile before any cantilever form goes on, so the order of work lines up. Rockwall Pool Resurfacing can price the coping and the replaster together.
