Pool Coping Replacement in Murphy, Texas
Rockwall Pool Resurfacing handles pool coping replacement in Murphy, Texas: lifting off a worn stone, brick or poured concrete cap from the top of the pool wall, roughening the wall beneath it and setting new coping with a watertight joint to the deck. The 2020 Census counted 21,013 residents, 3,305 more than in 2010, and the Census Bureau's newest estimate, 20,985 for July 1, 2025, sits just 0.1% under its April 2020 base.
The Handbook of Texas puts Murphy on Farm Road 544 five miles east of Plano in south central Collin County, and the City describes it as lying mainly at the crossroads of FM 544 and Murphy Road. Murphy Central Park and Amphitheater has seating for 2,500 to 3,000, a 2-acre stocked pond, a splash pad and a trail that joins the Maxwell Creek Trail. Estimates are free, and the first questions are what the coping is made of now and how many feet of it run around the pool.

A 2000s building wave and its pool edges
Settlers drawn by Peters Colony land grants reached the area in 1846, the Handbook says, and the town was called Old Decator and then Maxwell's Branch before the St. Louis Southwestern Railway arrived in 1888 and residents renamed it for William Murphy, who gave land for the tracks and depot. The City's history adds that Comfort and Lydia McMillen and their six children came from Arkansas in 1846 and settled on a branch of Muddy Creek later named Maxwell Creek. Murphy shrank to 135 people by 1961 and lost its mail service in 1954, then grew from the mid-1970s as a commuter town for Plano and Richardson, reaching 1,547 people in 1990 and 3,099 in 2000.
Most of its houses came in the decade after that. The Census Bureau's 2020–2024 survey puts 63.6% of Murphy's homes in the 2000–2009 decade, 10.2% in the 1990s and 17.8% after 2009, with about half older than 2005, the median build year; the 2020 Census counted 6,083 homes, up from 5,196 in 2010. Nearly all, 97.7%, are single-family detached houses, owners live in about 93.7% of the occupied ones, and the survey's medians are $555,500 for an owner-occupied home and $175,699 for household income.
Stone or poured concrete for the new edge
Stone for a second set of coping splits two ways in the Natural Stone Institute's paving campaign. Limestone, marble and travertine are calcium-carbonate stones it places mostly indoors or in fairly controlled outdoor settings; granite, basalt, quartzite and sandstone belong to a harder group it describes as standing up better to abrasion and chemicals. Where summers are hot, the campaign notes, long hours of sun can change a stone's color and work on its movement joints. Poured coping is the other route: Mortex makes cantilever forms in Keystone, bullnose and French Curve profiles, and a Stone Edge form it says gives poured coping the look of natural rock.

(469) 653-0486Murphy permits, codes and HOA covenants
Murphy's "When a Permit Is Required" page lists swimming pools, spas, hot tubs, decks, patios, concrete and residential remodels among the projects that need a City permit, and it tells owners to contact their homeowners association about deed restrictions and covenants as well. Applications have to be submitted and permits issued before work begins; once work is under way, the permit holder schedules the required inspections and keeps the permit posted on the job site. No Murphy page we read mentions pool coping, so Permits & Inspections is the office to ask which permit a coping job takes.
The City adopted the 2021 editions of the International codes and the 2020 National Electrical Code, effective March 1, 2024, and its list of adopted codes doesn't name the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code. Under Texas law, the version of that code in place on May 1, 2019 serves as every city's pool code unless the city takes up a later one, and where a city regulates pools, the statute reaches repairs and alterations as well as new construction.

(469) 653-0486Houston Black clay beside the coping
On the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service soil map, Houston Black clay covers about 81.8% of Murphy: 67.3% on 1 to 3 percent slopes, 9.4% on 0 to 1 percent slopes and 5.1% on eroded 2 to 4 percent slopes. Austin silty clay takes 4.8% and 3.1% on two slope classes, and Burleson clay 3.4%. Houston Black here runs up to 55 percent clay, and NRCS puts its shrink-swell figure (maximum linear extensibility) at 12 percent. Soils that NRCS marks very limited for slab-built houses because they swell and shrink take in 84.9% of the town's mapped ground; those marks are about houses, and the agency gives none for pools or decks.
Where coping meets a concrete deck, the 2021 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code requires the isolation joint between them to be watertight, and wherever a deck joins existing concrete it calls for a joint that protects the pool from damage caused by relative movement. Marmiro Stones, which supplies stone coping, draws that joint as an unbroken gap running all the way around the pool and down through the deck, usually 1/2 inch to an inch across, and it holds off on caulking a fresh concrete deck for at least 30 days so the slab can cure and shrink first.

(469) 653-0486Other pool work around Murphy
Beyond new coping, Rockwall Pool Resurfacing takes on coping repair, mastic replacement at the deck joint, waterline tile, travertine decks and full remodels for Murphy pools. A few miles away, we handle diving pool conversion in Parker and pool tile repair in Sachse.
Murphy buys its water from the North Texas Municipal Water District, drawn from lakes Lavon, Chapman and Texoma and treated at plants in Wylie, and the City delivers it to about 5,800 connections from three ground storage tanks and one elevated tank at 60 to 70 pounds per square inch. About 98.9% of Murphy lies in the City's own water service area on the Texas Water Development Board's map. The City's watering and drought rules weren't confirmed in our research, so if the water has to come down for the work, the current stage gets checked with the City first.

(469) 653-0486How a pool coping replacement runs
Permit and HOA check
Murphy lists pools, decks, patios and concrete work among permitted projects and points owners to their HOA's deed restrictions, so both are asked about the coping before the job is booked.
Lift the old caps and roughen the wall
With the old coping off, Unilock's method scarifies the top of the concrete pool wall so the mortar and new coping adhere, then dry-fits and cuts every piece.
Corners first, then the runs
Unilock sets all 90-degree corners before the rest, keeps units to 72 inches or less on straight pools and 18 inches or less on curved ones, and prefers miter cuts.
Bed, overhang and slope
Each unit goes down on concrete adhesive at the wall and a modified-mortar bed under the rest, overhanging about 2 inches and sloping at a 2% grade away from the water, with 1/4-inch joints of flexible exterior grout.
Seal the deck joint
For its DECK-O-SEAL, W. R. Meadows wants the joint twice as wide as the sealant is deep, a sealant depth between 1/4 and 1/2 inch set by a foam backer rod, and no use at all in joints under 1/4 inch wide.

(469) 653-0486Coping questions from Murphy pool owners
Is pool coping replacement cosmetic work in Murphy?
The City hasn't said so. Its permit page exempts cosmetic projects, and the examples it gives are painting, wallpapering, flooring, cabinets and trim work, all finishes on a house; pool coping isn't on that list. The same page names swimming pools, decks, patios and concrete among the projects that do need a permit. Ask Murphy's Permits & Inspections which applies before any coping comes off, and check the HOA's deed restrictions too.
Can brick coping go on any type of pool?
Its maker says so. Acme Brick, which sells Marion Ceramics' brick pool coping, quotes Marion's regional sales manager saying brick coping can be installed on gunite, fiberglass or vinyl-liner pools. On fiberglass and vinyl-liner pools the coping needs something solid to sit on, so Unilock's method first pours a reinforced concrete collar around the pool, six inches in each dimension at minimum, finished half an inch below the pool's top edge. Marion Ceramics adds that color varies naturally in fired clay and recommends blending coping from several cartons.
