Pool Deck Lifting and Leveling in Nevada, Texas

Rockwall Pool Resurfacing handles pool deck lifting and leveling in Nevada, Texas: raising concrete deck slabs that have sunk or tipped around a pool by pumping polyurethane foam or a cement-based grout through holes drilled in the slab. Nevada had 1,314 people in the 2020 Census and an estimated 1,522 on July 1, 2025, all of them in Collin County.

The Handbook of Texas places the town on Farm Road 1138 in southeastern Collin County, two miles east of Lavon Lake, and a 2005 newspaper account reprinted on the City's history page gives the local pronunciation as nuh-vay-duh. A free estimate begins with a walk around the deck to see which slabs dropped, by how much, and where the rain runs off.

Cracked, settled pool deck slab with an open joint at the coping

Blackland Prairie clay under every mapped acre

Settlers reached the area as early as the mid-1840s, drawn by the rich soils of the Blackland Prairies and the water of Bear Creek, the Handbook says. The soil map still shows that ground. Houston Black clay units cover 86.5% of Nevada on the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service map, the largest being Houston Black clay on 1 to 3 percent slopes at 77.6%, and eroded Heiden clay, at 7.7% and 4.5%, makes up most of the rest.

NRCS gives the main Houston Black soil a linear extensibility of up to 12 percent and up to 55 percent clay, and every soil it mapped inside the town, 100.0% of the mapped land, carries its very limited rating for houses on concrete slabs because of shrink and swell. The rating covers houses, not pool decks, and says nothing about a particular slab.

What a lift does under the slab

Alchatek, a lifting-foam maker, says structural polymer injected just below a slab first fills the voids and compresses the soil, and only after the soil is fully compressed does the slab begin to rise. Prime Resins, another foam maker, describes mudjacking, pumping a cement-based material through drilled holes, as the traditional method and says it is sometimes the right choice.

Nevada's flatwork, drainage and foundation rules

The City of Nevada requires permits for swimming pools, flatwork (concrete), retaining walls, fences and most dirt work that would alter the flow of water on or off a property, and it warns of significant fees and possible fines for starting work without one. Its residential flatwork checklist, for patios, sidewalks and similar slabs under the 2021 building and residential codes, calls for at least a 4-inch slab, No. 3 bars at 24 inches on centre both ways and 3,000 psi concrete, with an expansion joint where new work meets existing concrete or a foundation and dowels into the existing concrete. No work may begin before the permit is issued.

The pool permit checklist, written to the 2021 International Swimming Pool & Spa Code with local amendments (Ordinance No. 022123), puts deck steel on 24-inch centres, set on chairs and clamped to grounded sky bars, and has metal fence posts, downspouts and other equipment within 5 feet of the water grounded. It also asks that the property drain to the front or rear, with drainage kept away from the foundation and maintained, and that every retaining wall be engineered, inspected and permitted.

A separate checklist requires a foundation repair permit whenever repairs to a house foundation are worth $2,000 or more, backed by an engineer's letter, a stamped pier diagram and a foundation and elevation assessment. The City doesn't say whether lifting a pool deck falls under it, so ask before a lift is scheduled.

Stinebaugh's farm town and the 1927 tornado

Granville Stinebaugh, from Missouri, founded the town on his farm and named it for Nevada Territory, which he had passed through on his way to the California gold fields. The post office opened on August 3, 1880, and the St. Louis Southwestern Railway reached the town eight years later. Two early dates differ by source: the Handbook of Texas and the City's history page give 1889 for incorporation, while the 2013 state historical marker gives January 24, 1891.

At 2:20 a.m. on May 9, 1927, a half-mile-wide tornado destroyed the west side of town, the Texas Historical Commission's marker records, killing 27 people and injuring 75; the damaged Nevada Baptist Church sheltered an emergency hospital and morgue. The Handbook puts the damage at about $1 million and says Nevada never recovered: by 1950 it had 386 people. Markers now stand for the town (2013, on Highway 835 near Warren Street), the Baptist church (1985) and the Empire Masonic Lodge, and Nevada is in the Community Independent School District, whose office is on FM 1138 North.

Newer homes and subdivisions

The 2020 Census counted 467 homes in Nevada, up from 313 in 2010. The Census Bureau's 2020–2024 survey, whose sample is small enough to make its shares rough, puts 59.2% of homes in 2010 or later and 25.2% from 2000 to 2009, with a median year built of 2012; 96.4% are single-family detached houses, about 96.2% of occupied homes are owner-occupied, and the median value is $393,800. The City's ordinance list includes No. 21-10, annexing territory for Cope Homes' Lexington Subdivision, and the builder lists Lexington Heights, Bear Creek, Cobble Creek and Providence Point as Nevada communities.

Other deck work and Nevada's water

Along with lifting, Rockwall Pool Resurfacing handles deck resurfacing, mastic replacement at the coping joint, crack repair, coping repair and travertine decks around Nevada. Close by, we handle quartz pool finishes in Lavon and stamped concrete pool decks in Josephine.

Nevada Special Utility District supplies the town with treated surface water it buys from the North Texas Municipal Water District's Wylie Treatment Plant, drawn from Lavon Lake through delivery points on FM 1138 and FM 6. The district had no drought plan posted when its site was checked in October 2026, so ask it about pool fill rules before any job that drains a pool. When a pool is drained, the City makes it unlawful to let the water run onto neighbouring or public property: pools, hot tubs and spas drain to the sanitary sewer through a 3-inch p-trap, with a 1-inch air gap at the house sewer tie-in.

How a sunken pool deck is lifted

  1. Measure the drop

Each low slab is checked for how far it has sunk and which way it sheds water, with the City's rule that a property drains to the front or rear in mind.

  2. Find the lines first

Alchatek's specification calls for locating utilities and drain pipes and inspecting the drain lines before and after the lift, so foam cannot enter cracks in them.

  3. Drill at the low point

Holes, most often 3/8 or 5/8 inch, go in at the lowest point of the slab and 18 to 24 inches back from open joints, with more holes 3 to 4 feet apart on wide slabs.

  4. Inject and watch the gauges

Injection starts at the low point, and dial indicators reading in 0.001-inch steps track the slab so it isn't over-lifted; joints are saw-cut so slabs can move freely.

  5. Patch and check the joint

The holes are filled with cementitious grout or epoxy, and the sealant in the coping joint is checked in case it needs replacing.

Pool deck lifting questions from Nevada

How soon can a lifted pool deck be walked on?

With fast-setting foam, soon after the lift. Alchatek calls its AP Lift 430 Fast "traffic ready in 15 minutes", and its guide specification lists 90 percent of the foam's strength at 15 minutes. The patched holes and any resealed joints follow their own products' cure times, so check those before furniture goes back on the deck.

Does Nevada require a permit to pour new concrete beside a pool?

Plan on one. Nevada requires a permit for flatwork (concrete), its residential flatwork checklist covers patios, sidewalks and similar slabs, and no work may begin until the permit is issued. The City's spa checklist says new structural work such as a foundation, pad or deck needs a flatwork or building permit, and its fee schedule carries separate lines for flatwork and for foundation repair. If a sunken slab is replaced rather than lifted, ask the City which permit covers the new concrete.
