Glass Tile and All-Tile Pool Finishes in Rockwall, TX

Rockwall Pool Resurfacing installs glass tile pool finishes in Rockwall, Texas: all-tile interiors in glass or porcelain mosaic, and glass tile in spas and water features, set over a waterproof membrane. Lightstreams, a glass tile maker, requires that membrane under any partly or fully submerged tile, because thin-set mortar and grout are not waterproof, and asks for a movement-joint and crack-prevention system on top of it for glass.

Typical Dallas–Fort Worth figures for 2026 put glass mosaic at $10 to $50 per square foot, with basic solid colors at the low end and custom blends and iridescent glass higher. The estimate is free, and we'll go through the tile, the layout and the cure time before the fill with you.

Choosing glass tile for an all-tile pool

Lightstreams requires the American National Standards Institute and Tile Council of North America standards to be followed on every installation, and says only experienced professional tile installers who know the procedures should do the work. A guide specification from MAPEI and Daltile lists the standard for each layer of a tiled pool: cement grout to ANSI A118.6 or better, epoxy grout to ANSI A118.3, the waterproof membrane to ANSI A118.10, the crack-isolation membrane to ANSI A118.12, and movement joints to the Tile Council's EJ171 and ASTM C1193.

Mounting and the glue behind the sheet

LATICRETE, a tile-setting materials maker, recommends face-mounted glass under water, with paper or plastic on the front of the sheet, to avoid problems from poor coverage or a failing backing. It warns that some mosaic sheets are mounted with glues that soften and swell in water and lose their hold, anywhere from several weeks to several years after they go under water. Lunada Bay Tile, another glass tile maker, calls mastics unacceptable setting materials for glass tile in pools.

Color, shading and what shows through

Lightstreams says variation in surface, color, tone and shading is normal in its cast glass, and slight bubbles or depressions are common. Translucent glass also shows what's behind it: Lightstreams combs the thin-set with a 3/16-by-1/4-inch V-notch trowel, then flattens it to a smooth bed about 3/32 to 1/8 inch deep, because gaps, bubbles and trowel lines show through, and it notes that not every ANSI A118.4 polymer thin-set suits glass tile, some discoloring over time.

Glass tile at the waterline alone is pool tile repair and replacement work. Glass can also go into a cement finish as aggregate, as it does in some polished pool finishes.

How an all-tile pool interior is built

Oceanside Glass & Tile's layer build-up starts with a primary waterproofing on the concrete shell, then a mortar bed of nominal 3/4 inch on the walls and 1 1/4 inches on the floor, mixed 4 parts sand to 1 part Portland cement, then a secondary waterproofing, then the tile's bond coat and the tile. LATICRETE wants the membrane to form a continuous waterproof pan with no gaps, and doesn't recommend waterproofing only part of the pool, such as the waterline. It names poor surface preparation and cleaning as a primary cause of failed membranes and leveling mortars in pools. Where a pool remodeling job adds new concrete, LATICRETE wants the concrete shell cured at least 28 days before tiling.

Setting the tile

LATICRETE asks for 95 to 100% adhesive coverage on both the back of the tile and the surface it sits on, and Lunada Bay Tile sets 100% for translucent tile under water. Lightstreams back-butters each sheet for any fully submerged or translucent installation, because some thin-sets shrink as they cure and leave voids behind the tile that can discolor it and lead to delamination and mold. It also shades the work: sunlight passing through transparent glass can heat the thin-set while it cures, so tiling is done under tarps, screens or umbrellas.

Movement joints and grout

The Tile Council's design, as Lightstreams cites it, puts a flexible, neutral-cure, pool-grade silicone sealant between the waterline tile and the coping or deck, a joint at every inside corner, and joints no more than 8 feet apart on areas such as spa overflows and vanishing edges. Lunada Bay Tile calls that soft joint at the coping critical for every glass tile pool. Lightstreams waits at least 24 hours before grouting.

Curing before the fill

Lightstreams lists the industry's minimum cure times as 28 days for shotcrete or gunite, 1 to 7 days for the primary waterproofing, 7 days for the mortar bed, 1 day for the secondary waterproofing and 21 days after grouting before the fill, and tells installers to follow the setting-material maker. MAPEI's own times before filling run from three days for Ultraflex LFT Rapid to 28 days for Ultraflex LFT. The MAPEI and Daltile specification then fills at 24 to 30 inches a day and, in a heated pool, raises the water temperature no faster than about 2°F an hour.

Glass tile in Rockwall's heat, cold and water

The MAPEI and Daltile specification keeps the tiled surface and the air between 50°F and 95°F while tile goes in and for at least 7 days afterward. At Lavon Dam, the nearest NOAA station with temperature normals, the average high is 92.4°F in July and 93.3°F in August (1991–2020), close to that ceiling, and Rockwall's airport weather station dropped to 11°F on February 20, 2025, well below the floor. LATICRETE also says not to fill when very cold source water would go into an outdoor pool that has sat in the sun for several days.

Water balance for grout and glass

LATICRETE keeps a tiled pool between pH 7.2 and 8.0: above that, mineral deposits form on tile and grout, especially at the waterline, and can even form behind the tile and loosen it, while below it cement-based grout and mortar etch. Oceanside Glass & Tile calls a saturation index of 0.0 to 0.5 acceptable. The City of Rockwall's 2025 water report lists pH up to 8.8 and total hardness of 96.0 to 200 ppm, the North Texas Municipal Water District's plant figures. Lunada Bay Tile's start-up tests the water at the tap and again once the pool is full, and balances it to ANSI/APSP-5 or the National Plasterers Council's start-up procedure.

About 13 miles northwest, in Seis Lagos, where the median home was built in 2000 by the 2020–2024 American Community Survey, Rockwall Pool Resurfacing also installs glass tile pool finishes in Seis Lagos.

Glass tile pool questions and answers

Is tiling a pool a good idea?

It suits some pools and budgets. National 2025 figures call tile the costliest and most labor-intensive way to resurface a pool, at $8,000 to $30,000 or more, and national 2026 figures note that most owners use tile as a waterline accent because a full tile job on a standard pool shell can run $12,000 to $30,000 or more. The tile makers also set strict conditions, from a full waterproof membrane to movement joints and near-total adhesive coverage, and none of the tile or setting-material makers cited here gives a lifespan in years.

What is the best glass pool tile?

One made for submerged use, in a size and mounting its maker allows under water. LATICRETE points to ANSI A137.2, the American National Standard for glass tile, and prefers paper- or plastic-face-mounted sheets for pools. Lunada Bay Tile doesn't recommend its glass tile under water where the tile's two edge dimensions add up to more than 4 inches: a 1-by-2-inch tile (3 inches) is acceptable, a 1/2-by-4-inch tile (4 1/2 inches) is not.

How much does it cost to tile a whole pool?

National figures for 2026 put pool tile replacement at $15,000 on average, with most owners spending $3,000 to $20,000 and a full retile reaching $80,000; glass tile runs $7 to $50 per square foot and mosaic $75 to $100. A complicated mosaic retile runs $30,000 to $80,000, or $87 per square foot against $25 for a standard design. Rockwall Pool Resurfacing prices the pool free once it has seen it.

How do you clean glass pool tile?

Gently. Lightstreams says to clean glass tile faces only with a nylon vegetable brush, a 3M Blue nylon scrub pad, a soft sponge and warm water. Oceanside Glass & Tile warns that hydrofluoric, hydrochloric (muriatic) and phosphoric acids damage tile glaze and iridescent glass, and neutralizes any accidental contact at once with baking soda and water, 1 lb to 3 gallons. LATICRETE bans acid-based cleaners on its grouts and uses neutral-pH cleaners for routine care.

Does chlorine damage pool tile grout?

Not in the way most people think. LATICRETE calls it a common misconception that chlorine is what attacks cement-based tile-setting materials, and says calcium balance is the critical factor: when calcium hardness falls below 200 to 250 ppm, the water draws calcium out of cement-based grout and mortar, which deteriorate and etch. LATICRETE's epoxy grouts contain no Portland cement, and Interstyle, a glass tile maker, recommends an ANSI A118.3 epoxy grout for the most durable, stain-resistant result in pools.
