Pool Crack Repair in Rockwall, TX
Rockwall Pool Resurfacing handles pool crack repair in Rockwall, Texas: working out whether a crack runs through the concrete shell or only the plaster, then sealing it by injection, stitching it across with staples, or patching it before a new finish goes on. Torque Lock, a maker of crack-repair staples, says most inground pools are 6 to 8 inches of gunite or shotcrete sprayed over steel rebar, with a wider rim of about 12 inches along the top called the bond beam.
Typical Dallas–Fort Worth figures for 2025 put a hairline crack repair at $200 to $500 and a major structural crack fix at $4,000 to $7,000. Estimates are free, and we'll talk through what the crack is and what it needs before anything is booked.

Structural pool cracks and surface cracks
The National Plasterers Council's glossary separates substrate cracks, which run in the structure under the finish, from shrinkage cracks that form in the finish itself while it is applied or within 24 hours of final set. The CDC's model aquatic code, voluntary guidance for public pools, calls any break in a pool's structural shell or deck a crack, and a structural crack one that weakens the vessel's structural integrity.
Shrinkage and check cracks in the finish
Every cement-based pool finish develops some shrinkage or check cracking before the pool is filled, the Council says, and those cracks typically reseal underwater as the cement keeps hydrating. Torque Lock likewise calls shrinkage cracks from the first cure normal and shallow. Crazing and hairline cracks in an older plaster surface are pool plaster repair work.
Rust stains and thin cover over the steel
The American Shotcrete Association traced one warning sign, rust stains coming through the plaster of a new pool, to steel shot with little or no concrete over it. It says keeping proper cover over the reinforcing steel is the shotcrete contractor's job, because a section shot with reduced cover is much less durable than its designer intended.

What makes a pool shell crack
Torque Lock's list of causes starts with a pool not engineered for its soil, naming clay soils that expand among the most problematic, then moves to poorly designed retaining walls and decks nearby, too much water in the gunite or rebar that wasn't tied properly, a new shell not kept moist, a pool built on poorly compacted ground, and soil movement.
One-time events and ground that keeps moving
Anderson Manufacturing, a maker of leak-detection tools, says the first step in a crack repair is understanding what caused it. A crack from a one-time event, such as an extremely cold winter or a pool left unfilled for some time, shouldn't keep moving; recurring ground movement, as in soils that swell when moist and shrink when dry, should be expected to continue, and the repair has to allow for it. Erosion or hillside slope creep it leaves to a structural or soil engineer.
Rockwall's clays and the 2021 freeze
NRCS describes Heiden and Ferris, two of Rockwall's main clays, as soils with high shrink-swell potential that open cracks 0.5 to 3 inches wide, 12 inches deep or more, in dry periods; Heiden's stay open 90 to 150 days in normal years. In the February 2021 winter storm, DFW Airport stayed at or below freezing for 93 hours and then for 139 more, falling to -2°F on February 16.
East-southeast of Rockwall in Poetry, 58.0% of homes were built before 1990 by 2020–2024 survey estimates, and NRCS gives Lufkin, the main soil in the town's largest map unit, a shrink-swell measure of up to 17 percent. Rockwall Pool Resurfacing also handles pool crack repair in Poetry. Where the slab beside a cracked pool has sunk or tipped, the deck itself is a job for pool deck lifting and leveling.

(469) 653-0486How pool cracks are repaired
Anderson describes three levels of repair for a leaking gunite crack: a topical repair made with the pool still full, crack injection, or extensive concrete removal and structural re-engineering. The choice rests on how severe the crack is, how permanent the fix needs to be and the budget.
Crack injection
Low-pressure injection fills the whole depth of the crack. In Anderson's method the pool is drained and the surface dried, injection ports are glued over the crack every 12 to 18 inches, the crack face is sealed with epoxy, and urethane foam goes in at about 40 psi, expanding up to 7 times its volume. Sika rates its Sikadur-35 Hi-Mod LV injection epoxy for concrete that is dry or damp but free of standing water, and not for cracks wider than 1/4 inch. For cracks too fine to take epoxy, the American Shotcrete Association points to lower-viscosity materials and an engineer or injection specialist experienced with shotcrete. Torque Lock, which sells staples, argues that epoxy injected from inside the pool can't fill a crack front to back, a competing maker's view.
Staples and stitches across the crack
Torque Lock's method drains the pool, grinds a channel along each mapped crack, sets its staples about every 12 inches and covers them with hydraulic cement and a waterproof coating before the pool is refinished. It claims up to 5,000 lbs of compression per staple and calls its staples the only permanent fix for a crack through the shell; both are the maker's claims. Anderson describes stitches of rebar, stainless steel or carbon fiber set in epoxy below the plaster every 8 to 12 inches where a crack is expected to keep moving.
Slots for actively leaking cracks
For a crack with water coming through, Xypex chips a U-shaped slot, never a V, 1 inch wide and at least 1.5 inches deep, stops the running water with its Patch'n Plug, packs the slot with its Dry-Pac mix over a crystalline slurry and keeps the repair moist for two to three days. Quikrete also warns against V-shaped cuts and makes a white version of its Hydraulic Water-Stop Cement for pool patching. Finding where the water is going in the first place is pool leak detection and repair.
Engineers, wet tests and the new finish
Anderson reminds owners that cracks can point to more serious problems and suggests a second opinion from a builder or structural engineer when in doubt; for spider-web cracking across a floor, the American Shotcrete Association recommends an engineering firm that can core the shell and test the cores under ASTM C42 or C1604. Before plastering, the Association patches small holes in a shell by pressure washing at 3,000 psi or more, hand-packing a non-shrink hydraulic cement of at least 4,000 psi 28-day strength and roughening the surface that will take the plaster. Asked about wet-testing a shotcrete pool, it knows of no pool-specific standard but points to ACI 350.1-10's limit of 0.05% of the volume a day over a 72-hour test, after the pool is filled and left to saturate for 3 days. Fiberglass shells are a different material with their own repairs, covered under fiberglass pool resurfacing and repair.

How to tell if a pool crack is structural?
By where it runs and when it formed. Cracks that opened while the finish was going on, or within a day of final set, are shrinkage cracks by the National Plasterers Council's definition. Torque Lock says structural cracks can run vertically or horizontally in the shell and most will show through the plaster and even the tile over the bond beam, and it maps a crack's full length by misting the drained surface and watching which lines hold moisture as it dries. To know for sure, it advises a proper leak detection or pool inspection, and Rockwall Pool Resurfacing can look at the crack before anything is drained.
Can a crack in a pool be repaired?
Yes. The American Shotcrete Association says any concrete crack-repair method applies to shotcrete, since shotcrete is simply a way of placing concrete, and that a surface coating over a crack that still moves needs enough thickness and elasticity to tolerate it. Which repair fits depends on the crack's cause and severity, as the sections above explain.
Can I repair cracks in my swimming pool underwater?
Only with a patch, and it is the least permanent option. Anderson says epoxy putty can be applied underwater and matched to the pool's surface, but it is rigid once cured, so later movement undermines it and such repairs often need attention every year. Its injection method, which fills the full depth of the crack, needs the pool drained and the surface on each side of the crack dry.
How much does it cost to repair a crack in a pool?
It depends on the damage. One set of Dallas figures for 2025 puts minor structural cracks at $500 to $1,500, moderate cracks with exposed rebar at $2,000 to $5,000, and major damage needing resurfacing or shell replacement at $5,000 to $15,000 or more. Nationally, small cracks in a gunite or concrete pool run about $75 per linear foot (2025).
How long does a pool crack repair take?
The repair itself can be quick; the cure and any refinish add to it. Anderson says that once the pool is drained, a basic injection of a 10- to 15-foot crack can generally be done in about half a day, and staples add about another half day. Prime Resins says its water-seeking injection resins can take up to 24 hours to reach final cure, and Xypex keeps its slot repairs moist for two to three days.
