Pool Drain and Acid Wash in Rockwall, TX

Rockwall Pool Resurfacing handles pool drain and acid wash jobs in Rockwall, Texas: draining the pool, washing the plaster with diluted muriatic acid to lift stains and dirt, neutralizing the runoff, then refilling and balancing the water. The National Plasterers Council defines an acid wash as cleaning a pool's finish by dissolving material on its surface to remove efflorescence, dirt or other stains.

Typical Dallas–Fort Worth figures for 2026 put a deep cleaning or acid wash at $280 to $580 per service. Estimates are free, and we'll talk through whether the finish needs an acid wash at all before anything is booked.

What a pool acid wash does, and when it's used

The Council's glossary also describes a gentler version: a low-strength, diluted acid solution that removes certain stains, dirt, precipitants or marks with little, if any, of the surface compromised. The acid itself is pool muriatic acid, which the Council's start-up card describes as 31–33% hydrochloric acid.

Cleaning a stained or dull finish

An acid wash works by dissolving material on the plaster's surface, so how often it is done matters, as the questions below explain. Some stains can be treated with the pool still full instead; pool plaster repair covers those in-water treatments and the spot repairs a worn finish may need.

Before a bond coat or a new finish

SGM's Bond Kote instructions call for removing mildew, algae, fungus and rust before its bond coat goes on, either by sandblasting or by an acid wash followed by neutralizing with soda ash, and for heavily sanding or water-blasting any surface that is unusually soft, painted, peeling or flaking. The prepared plaster has to be rough and porous enough to absorb water. That preparation is the first stage of pool replastering over old plaster.

The waterline tile

Calcium scale on the tile band at the water line is a separate job with its own methods, pool tile cleaning and calcium removal.

How a drained pool is acid washed

SGM's acid-wash steps start in the bowl, the deep end, and work up toward the shallow end to keep streaks, which it calls rivers, off the floor. Walls and steps come last, the solution isn't allowed to puddle in the bowl, and a sump pump keeps carrying the runoff away once it has been diluted and neutralized.

Neutralizing and rinsing

SGM neutralizes acid left on the finish with soda ash and water to avoid discoloration, and CL Industries tells installers to neutralize with baking soda or soda ash and rinse thoroughly with water. On its Hydrazzo finish, CL Industries protects the deepest area with sodium bicarbonate or soda ash during the wash so that spot isn't over-exposed.

Keeping the empty pool safe

An empty shell sits exposed. The American Shotcrete Association lists a pool left empty for extended times among the questions a pool's design has to answer, since it can mean more shrinkage or direct exposure to sun or cold. A hydrostatic relief valve sits in the main drain's sump: Hayward's threads into its 1½-inch or 2-inch opening, over a slotted collector tube, and AquaStar, another fittings maker, says its 2-inch valve helps prevent damage to the pool from hydrostatic pressure and equalizes it where water tables are high.

Drain water, drought stages and the refill in Rockwall

Acid wash water can't simply go down the street. SGM discards the runoff after it is diluted and neutralized, and Rockwall's storm-water code accepts, as a defense to its ban, only dechlorinated pool water with no harmful amounts of chemicals and a pH of 6.5 to 8.5; the same ordinance lists pool chemicals as household hazardous waste that must stay out of streets and storm drains.

Reusing the water on the property

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality's reuse rules let pool drain water go onto landscaping without its authorization, but not within five days of an acid or shock treatment, never so that it ponds or runs across property lines or onto paving, and never through a connection to a sewer or septic system.

Drought stages

Stage 1 of Rockwall's drought plan asks all users to drain and refill pools less often, and the later stages can go further. As of October 4, 2026, no stage was named on the City's official pages, so check the current stage with the City before the drain-down. East of Rockwall, Union Valley's water comes through Cash Special Utility District, whose plan makes the same Stage 1 request and limits draining and refilling in its Stage 3, and Rockwall Pool Resurfacing also handles pool acid wash in Union Valley.

Refilling and rebalancing

Once the pool is refilled, the National Plasterers Council wants the water tested right away for pH, cyanuric acid, carbonate alkalinity, calcium hardness, total dissolved solids, chlorine, metals and temperature, and balanced by its start-up procedure, a process that can take 7 to 10 days. Timing the drain around the weather is covered in the guide on when to resurface a pool in Rockwall.

Pool acid wash cost in the Dallas–Fort Worth area

The pool's size and the finish's condition set most of the price, and acid washes are priced by the interior surface, walls and floor together, not the pool's footprint. These are typical Dallas–Fort Worth figures, with national ones where no local figure exists:

Pool drain and acid wash, typical prices
Deep cleaning or acid wash, per service (Dallas, 2026)
$280–$580
Draining a pool for repairs (Dallas, 2026)
$190–$240
Full drain and clean (Dallas–Fort Worth, 2026)
from $1,200
Acid wash, per sq ft of interior surface (national, 2026)
$0.40–$0.60
Acid wash, 1,000 sq ft of interior surface (national, 2026)
$400–$600
One-time chemical balancing after the refill (national, 2025)
$150–$350

The Dallas–Fort Worth drain-and-clean figure adds acid washing as an extra where it's needed. Nationally, a chlorine wash ran $300 to $500 in 2025 figures, against $350 to $550 for an acid wash and $500 to $700 for a drain and clean. Pool acid wash questions and answers

How much should it cost to acid wash a pool?

National 2025 figures put most residential inground pools at $300 to $700, averaging $450, and size them by interior surface: about $240 to $350 for a 10-by-20-foot pool, $470 to $700 for a 16-by-32 and $670 to $1,000 for a 20-by-40. Draining, refilling and rebalancing are priced on top. Rockwall Pool Resurfacing measures the pool and prices it free.

How often should pools be acid washed?

As seldom as possible. Universal White Cement says frequent drain-and-acid washes may make a pool look whiter for a while but strip years off the plaster in the process. The EPA puts a well-maintained pool's draining at once every 3 to 7 years to keep total dissolved solids down, and the National Plasterers Council says very high calcium hardness or dissolved solids can call for draining part or all of the water.

Is it necessary to acid wash a pool?

Only for certain jobs. Besides cleaning stains off an old finish, the National Plasterers Council uses the term for etching a new cement finish to expose its aggregate, and CL Industries says its Hydrazzo finish can be acid washed again and polished if the proper start-up wasn't followed. Before a bond coat, SGM accepts sandblasting in place of an acid wash.

Is it safe to acid wash a pool yourself?

It carries real risks. NIOSH lists the hazards of hydrochloric acid as irritation of the nose, throat and larynx, coughing and choking, and eye and skin burns from the solution, and notes it is highly corrosive to most metals. The CDC's model aquatic code says a concentrated chemical is always added to water when diluting, never water to the chemical, each one mixed in its own labeled container and never two in the same dilution water. River Pools, a pool maker, tells owners never to drain a pool themselves and to drain one only when a necessary repair requires it.

Does the water need balancing after an acid wash?

Yes, from the first day of the refill. The National Plasterers Council's checklist for a refilled pool includes metals, mainly iron and copper, alongside pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness and chlorine, and nationally a one-time chemical balancing service ran $150 to $350 in 2025 figures. We'll go over the start-up with you before the job begins.
